Peso Da Régua: Visiting the Douro's River Town from Porto

Peso da Régua sits at the western gate of the Douro wine region, about 1 hour 55 minutes from Porto by train. This page covers what Régua is, how to reach it, the Museu do Douro, the river front and the day trips that work from here, including Lamego and the São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint. It also explains when Régua makes sense as an overnight base rather than a rushed day trip. If you would rather let someone else drive, the Douro Valley wine tour from Porto comparison covers small-group days with tastings, lunch and a river cruise.

Quick answer Régua in brief

Régua is about 1 hour 55 minutes from Porto by train. It is a working wine town rather than a postcard village, with the Museu do Douro, the IVDP head office and a river front that launches both short and full-day cruises. It rewards half a day on foot and works better as a base for a night than as a single rushed stop.

Key takeaways

Getting to Régua from Porto

Régua is roughly 75 km by road and 2 hours by rail east of Porto. Three ways to do it, each with a different trade-off between cost, speed and scenery.

By Train

The CP Linha do Douro is the classic route. Through InterRegional trains leave Porto Campanhã at 07:30, 09:30, 13:30 and 17:30, plus a 15:25 departure. The 07:30 reaches Régua at 09:25 and the 09:30 arrives at 11:20, both in under 2 hours. Tickets are fixed price with no seat reservation, so they cannot sell out, but seats are unreserved so arrive early for a window seat. Urban trains from São Bento at 06:30, 09:30, 13:35, 18:30 and 22:25 end at Marco de Canaveses and need a change for Régua. The return list from Régua includes 10:33, 12:44, 14:33, 17:12, 18:03 and 18:37, with a last through service at 21:07 that reaches Porto Campanhã at 23:35. Some Regional trains run Monday to Saturday only, so Sunday timetables are thinner. There is no Wi-Fi and no trolley on board, only toilets.

For a full timetabling walkthrough, see Porto to Douro Valley by train.

  • First useful train: 07:30 IR from Campanhã, arriving Régua 09:25
  • Journey time: about 1 hour 55 minutes on the direct IR services
  • No reservation needed, fixed price tickets
  • Sit on the right side travelling east for river views

By Car

The A4 covers the distance in about an hour, passing through the Marão tunnel section, which recent sources report as toll free, so check before you drive. From Régua, the N222 east to Pinhão is only about 25 km but budget 40 minutes because the road is winding and slow. The São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint is 18 km and 25 minutes from town.

A full N222 circuit of Régua, Pinhão and Tua covers over 120 km and takes about 7 hours with stops.

Régua to Pinhão on the N222about 25 kmabout 40 minutes

By Boat

The slow way, and for many the whole point. Cruzeiros Douro runs an upstream cruise from Porto departing 08:00 from Cais de Gaia or 08:30 and 09:00 from Cais da Ribeira, with a coach returning guests to Porto between 18:30 and 19:00. It costs €75 on weekdays in April, May and October, €82 on weekdays June to September and €92 on weekends, with breakfast and a roast pork loin lunch aboard.

A full one-way Douro cruise takes 6 to 8 hours. Boats pass through the Crestuma-Lever and Carrapatelo dams, the locks being part of the spectacle. Compare all boat options in the Douro river cruise from Porto guide, or book the river cruise to Régua with lunch at $81, which runs the same river with a bus one way and the boat the other.

What to Do in Peso Da Régua

Most visits to Régua work around three stops.

Museu Do Douro

The region's main museum sits on the river front and tells the story of Douro viticulture. It opens daily 10:00 to 18:00 from 1 March to 31 October and 10:00 to 17:30 from 1 November to 28 February, with last entry 15 minutes before closing. It closes only on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May.

A secondary listing gives the ticket with a port tasting at about €10. Facilities include a restaurant, a wine bar and a terrace over the river, plus free parking for a maximum of 20 cars and 2 minibuses. The Cruzeiros Douro Régua pier sits directly in front of the museum, so museum and cruise combine easily in one morning.

Solar Do Vinho Do Porto

The IVDP, the body that regulates Douro and Port wine, has its head office in Peso da Régua, and in 2004 it opened this tasting house in a restored 18th century manor on Rua da Ferreirinha. Entry is free, tastings are paid, and there is a shop and a garden. One source lists it Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 20:00, closed Sundays and holidays, on phone +351 254 320 960.

Another portal lists only Friday and Saturday afternoons. The sources conflict, so call before making a special trip rather than trusting either listing.

Cais Da Régua and the River Front

The Cais da Régua is the riverside heart of town, and the Ecopista Ribeirinha path along the water makes a popular early morning stroll. Rabelo boats moor here, and short cruises run from the pier in front of the museum. Cruzeiros Douro sells a 1 hour Régua in Sight cruise at €13 and a Régua to Pinhão afternoon cruise from €29.

The river front is also where the full-day cruise passengers arrive and depart.

Cruises from Régua

Régua is a working cruise hub in both directions. Upstream options include Régua to Pocinho at €94 and Régua to São João da Pesqueira at €102 with Cruzeiros Douro. Downstream, a full day Régua to Porto to Régua cruise leaves at 10:00 or 10:30 and returns at 21:20, priced at €71 on weekdays and €87 on weekends, €77 on summer weekdays, with soup, roast pork loin lunch and drinks included.

A package pairing the Régua to Pinhão cruise with the historic train costs €135, boarding at the Régua pier at 12:00 and reaching Pinhão at 15:00, with a port aperitif and a grilled veal lunch on board. That package runs June to October.

Day Trips from Régua

Régua earns its keep as a launch point. Four outings work from town without a car, and a fifth if you rent one.

Lamego by Bus

Lamego is about 15 minutes and 7 km away, served by Rede Expressos, Citi Express and Rodonorte with several daily departures. Rede Expressos runs from Lamego to Régua at 7:00, 13:00, 15:45, 16:00, 17:15, 20:30 and 21:00. In Lamego, the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios climbs Monte de Santo Estêvão on a long staircase, begun in 1750 and finished in 1905.

The cathedral (Sé) has free admission with listed hours of 08:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:00. One warning: the Museu de Lamego is closed for renovation works and its own site still shows it closed, so do not build a day around it.

São Leonardo De Galafura

A local guide rates it the best viewpoint on the N222. It sits about 18 km and 25 minutes by car from Peso da Régua, at an altitude of 566 m according to one source, with another local guide citing about 640 m. This is where the writer Miguel Torga described the Douro as an excess of nature.

There is no bus listed, so you need a car or a tour that stops here. The private Douro Valley tour from Porto options build the N222 drive into the route, and the fully customizable private tour at $236.62 lets you set the stops yourself.

Casa De Mateus

The Mateus estate near Vila Real opens Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00 and weekends 9:00 to 17:30. The Chapel and Park visit costs €13.50, the Museum visit €19 and the Special Guided Visit €27, with 25 percent off for students and 50 percent off for children 6 to 12. A house wine tasting costs €45 and the chapel opens only April to October.

The estate covers twenty hectares with a cedar tunnel, rose garden and boxwood gardens, and the house has been a National Monument since 1911. Book through [email protected] or +351 259 323 121. It needs a car or a taxi from Régua.

The Historic Train

The Comboio Histórico do Douro runs between Régua and Tua from 6 June to 18 October, on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays. It leaves Régua at 15:32, reaches Tua at 16:35, departs back at 17:07 and returns to Régua at 18:22, stopping at Pinhão from 17:25 to 17:50. In 2026 a 1960s diesel locomotive pulls five early 20th century carriages with 254 seats.

Fares are €60 for adults, €32 for children aged 4 to 12 and €56 each for groups of 10 or more. Tickets go on sale up to 60 days ahead through CP counters, online or in the app, and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable.

Pinhão by Train or Boat

Pinhão is 25 minutes east on the 09:26 IR from Régua, calling at Covelinhas and Ferrão. Return trains from Pinhão include 12:18, 14:07, 16:41, 18:11 and 20:24. If you prefer the water, the Régua to Pinhão afternoon cruise starts from €29, and the €135 cruise plus historic train package covers both in one day.

What to do once you are there is the business of Pinhão Douro Valley, which owns that town in full.

Régua as a Base for a Night

Staying the night buys you the quiet hours and makes the two-day route feasible without a car.

Why Stay Over

Régua has the region's transport density: around a dozen daily trains to Porto, buses to Lamego every few hours and the cruise pier at the museum door. It also holds the title the OIV gave it as the International City of Vine and Wine in 1988, and the municipality counts 16,424 residents across 95 km2 in 8 parishes, so it is a real town with services rather than a vineyard hamlet. The Ecopista riverside walk and the museum terrace fill the hours between the day crowds leaving and the last train.

Where to Sleep

Quinta do Vallado Wine Hotel at Peso da Régua has 19 rooms, 5 in the traditional house, 8 in the modern wing and 6 in the Casa da Eira suites. Further afield, the Wine House Hotel at Quinta da Pacheca in Cambres, Lamego has 15 rooms including barrel cabins, is adults only and holds One Michelin Key. Six Senses Douro Valley near Lamego has 71 rooms and 10 spa treatment rooms and is about 90 minutes by car from Porto airport.

Hotel prices are not stated here. More options, including Pinhão-side stays, are compared in where to stay in the Douro Valley.

Festivals Worth Timing

The municipal calendar names Nossa Senhora do Socorro in August, the Jornadas Medievais do Douro, the Feira do Livro do Douro and S. João do Rio among the town's festivals. Douro Wine City 2026 ran from 5 to 13 June at the Auditório Municipal, the sixth edition and the longest since 2019, with 82 wine exhibitors, free wine tasting, showcooking and live music over nine days. If a trip lines up with one of these, Régua is at its most lively.

Check the municipal site for the next edition before travelling.

Peso Da Régua: Questions

Is Régua worth visiting?

Yes, if you arrive with realistic expectations. Régua is a working wine town of 16,424 residents and the seat of the IVDP, not a postcard village. The Museu do Douro, the free-entry Solar do Vinho do Porto and the river front with a 1 hour cruise at €13 fill half a day well, and it is the best-connected base in the region for Lamego, Pinhão and the historic train.

How do I get from Porto to Peso da Régua?

The train is the standard answer: direct InterRegional trains leave Porto Campanhã at 07:30, 09:30, 13:30, 15:25 and 17:30, with the 07:30 arriving at 09:25, about 1 hour 55 minutes en route. Tickets are fixed price with no reservation needed. The details are in Porto to Douro Valley by train.

How far is Régua from Porto?

About 75 km by road, roughly an hour on the A4, and about 1 hour 55 minutes by train from Campanhã. By boat it is a full day, 6 to 8 hours upstream through the Crestuma-Lever and Carrapatelo dams, which is why most boat travellers return by bus or train. See the Douro river cruise from Porto guide.

Can you do Régua as a day trip from Porto?

Yes. The 07:30 train arrives 09:25 and returns run all day, including a 17:12 departure reaching Campanhã at 19:00. Alternatively, the river cruise to Régua with lunch at $81 takes 10.5 hours with snacks and lunch on board, no winery visit included. A day works for the museum and river front, but one night unlocks the region properly.

What is the difference between Régua and Pinhão?

Régua is the bigger transport and museum town at the western gate of the wine region, with the Museu do Douro, the IVDP and most of the region's trains and buses. Pinhão is the smaller village in the heart of the vineyards, famous for its station tiles and riverside quintas. They are 25 minutes apart by train, and Pinhão Douro Valley covers Pinhão in detail.

Is there a winery visit in Régua itself?

Not in the town centre. The Régua answer to wine is the Museu do Douro with its tasting ticket at about €10 and the Solar do Vinho do Porto, where entry is free and paid tastings are poured. For actual quinta visits with tours and tastings, Quinta do Vallado sits at Peso da Régua, and the wider choice of estates is mapped in Douro Valley wineries.

Prefer the water? The Douro river cruise from Porto to Régua with lunch aboard runs 10.5 hours with a bus one way and the boat the other.
