Pinhão, Douro Valley: the Village, the Train and the Quintas
Pinhão Douro Valley is the village most people picture when they imagine the Douro: terraced vineyards on every slope, a river lined with rabelo boats and a railway station under blue tiles. It sits at km 118 of the Douro line, about 25 km east of Peso da Régua, and the IR train from Porto Campanhã covers the journey in a little over two hours. This page covers Pinhão as a place: what to see on foot, which quintas you can walk to, the Casal de Loivos viewpoint and the case for staying a night. For the train journey itself, see Porto to Douro Valley by train. For the wineries of the whole region, see the Douro Valley wineries guide. The bookable tours are compared on all Douro Valley wine tours from Porto.

Quick answer Pinhão in brief
Pinhão is 2 hours 16 to 21 minutes from Porto Campanhã on the IR train, which leaves at 07:30, 09:30, 13:30 and 17:30 with a 15:25 departure besides. The station is a sight in itself, covered in 24 blue azulejo panels from 1937 showing the grape harvest. Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Roêda all sit within a walk of the station, and a 2 hour rabelo cruise to Tua and back costs €30. A full day works, but a night lets you add the Casal de Loivos viewpoint at your own pace.
Key takeaways
- The first useful train leaves Campanhã at 07:30 and reaches Pinhão at 09:51, and the full timetable and fares are on the train page.
- Skim the What to Do in Pinhão list before you go: station tiles, rabelo cruise, viewpoint.
- Three quintas are walkable from the station, and the table under Quintas Within Walking Distance compares their tastings.
- If you prefer someone else to drive, the Complete Douro Valley wine tour from Porto ends with a 50-minute cruise from Pinhão.
What to Do in Pinhão
Pinhão is a small village, and the main sights sit within a few hundred metres of the station. Here is everything worth blocking time for.
The Station and Its Azulejo Panels
Most visitors start on the platform, because the station is an attraction in its own right. The interior walls carry 24 blue azulejo panels from 1937 that show the grape harvest and port wine production, made by the Aleluia factory in Aveiro. Trains still call here, so you can photograph the tiles while you wait for the next one.
The station sits at km 118 of the Douro line. If you arrive on the 07:30 departure you are here at 09:51, with the whole village ahead of you before lunch.
A Rabelo Boat on the River
Rabelo boats were built to carry wine barrels down the river, and several now carry visitors on short loops from Pinhão. The cheapest option is a 1 hour trip from Pinhão to Romaneira and back for €15 with Cruzeiros Douro. The standard outing is the 2 hour Pinhão to Tua cruise and back at €30, sold by Cruzeiros Douro and Magnífico Douro, with departures at 10:30 and 14:30 listed for the Cruzeiros Douro and Roteiro do Douro versions and audio guides in 5 languages on the Magnífico Douro one.
There is also a sunset cruise at €30. If you want the boat to yourself, Magnífico Douro hires a private rabelo from €200 per hour. Compare these short trips with the Douro river cruise from Porto, which is a full day on the water.
The Walk to Casal De Loivos
Above the village, the Casal de Loivos viewpoint looks down over the river bend at Pinhão and the terraces on both sides. The walking route by the cemetery is 3 to 4 km, and guides differ on how long it takes, so budget 1 to 1.5 hours each way on foot. By car the drive is about 7 km and takes roughly 10 minutes on steep winding roads.
A small bar at the viewpoint sells wine by the glass, which is as good an excuse for the climb as the view itself. Go in the morning before the heat if you walk up in summer.
Wine Tasting Without a Car
In Pinhão you can taste port and Douro wines without renting a car. Quinta das Carvalhas and Quinta do Bomfim both sit within a few hundred metres of the station, and Quinta da Roêda is a 20 to 25 minute walk along the river road. Tastings run from a €17 wine flight at Carvalhas to an €88 tasting at the same estate.
The village itself has 622 residents on 3.0 km2, so distances stay short. The full comparison is in the table further down this page.
The Bridges and the Waterfront
Two bridges span the river at Pinhão and both are worth a look from the dock. The Alijó municipality records a road bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel and a historic metal railway bridge beside it. The village restaurants include the waterside wine bar Vale do Tabua.
Pinhão has held town status since 1991, and it was the first parish in Vila Real district to get electricity, telephone, a post office and running water. Parking in the village fills quickly in summer, another reason the train is the easier way in.
Pinhão as a Stop on the Line
If you are riding the line east, Pinhão makes the natural turning point. Tua is 15 minutes further on the 09:51 service, arriving at 10:06, and the Linha do Tua branch that once left from there ran 133.8 km before closing in 2018. Pocinho is 10:50 from the 07:30 departure, but it has little beyond a couple of bar-restaurants.
Régua to Pinhão takes 25 minutes on the 09:26 IR, calling at Covelinhas and Ferrão, so you can combine both towns. The Peso da Régua page covers the other end of that run.

Quintas Within Walking Distance
Three quintas sit close enough to Pinhão station to reach on foot, and each publishes its own tasting prices. The table compares them, with figures from the quintas' own sites where given. Walking times are not stated on any official page, so treat the distances as straight-line approximations.
Quinta Do Bomfim
Quinta do Bomfim is about 0.55 km in a straight line from Pinhão station, roughly 500 m from the river dock, which makes it the easiest quinta to reach on foot. It is open daily 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 March to 31 October with the last visit at 17:30, and 09:30 to 18:30 from 1 November to 28 February with the last visit at 17:00. It closes on 25 December, 1 January and 4 July for staff training. The estate runs the riverside restaurant Bomfim 1896 with chef Pedro Lemos, which appears in the Michelin Guide, plus vineyard walks and a Merenda na Vinha picnic with a €2 wine glass add-on. Bookings go through the Symington site or on +351 254 730 370.
Every Bomfim tasting includes a guided visit, and the price list is on the Symington site. A Bomfim visit fits neatly either side of a 10:30 rabelo departure.
Quinta Das Carvalhas
Quinta das Carvalhas is about 0.45 km in a straight line from Pinhão station, and its tasting room serves wine flights from €17. It opens 10:00 to 19:00 from April to October and 10:00 to 18:00 from November to March, closed 25 December. The estate adds a €15 shuttle sightseeing tour at 10:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 from April to October, a guided vineyard tour at €48, a premium private tour at €68 and the A Ruin with a View tasting at €88, with children at €5.
It is the walk-in option if you arrive on the 07:30 train, since the tasting room opens at 10:00.
Quinta Da Roêda
Quinta da Roêda, the Croft estate, is about 1.4 km in a straight line from Pinhão station, a 20 to 25 minute walk along the river road. Slots run from 09:30 to 16:30 in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French, and Croft replies to online requests within 24 hours. Tastings cost €20 Roêda, €30 Introduction to Croft, €33 Mixology, €40 Croft Tawny, €48 Wine Lover, €51.50 Terroir and €59.50 Connoisseur per person.
A self-guided Discovery tour costs €11, or €27 with a tasting, which is one of the cheapest visits near Pinhão.
Quintas That Need More Than a Walk
Quinta de la Rosa sits about 1.1 km in a straight line west of the station on the opposite bank, so allow a taxi or a longer walk rather than a short stroll. Its visits are good value: a 30 minute Wine Tour at €10, a 1 hour Wine Tour and Tasting at €25 with 2 DOC wines and 2 ports, the Winemaker's Lunch at €50 for 2.5 hours, and the Vale do Inferno exclusive tour at €140 for about 2 hours 15 minutes. Reserve on +351 254 732 254.
Quinta do Noval keeps a wine shop at 15 Rua da Praia in Pinhão, open 7 days a week from 10:30 to 19:00, but estate visits are by reservation only. Quinta Nova lies in Covas do Douro near Ferrão station, 5 km from Pinhão in a straight line, with tours at €42 and €70 leaving at 10:45, 12:15, 15:30 and 17:30 from April to October, booked on +351 969 860 056. The broader picture is in the Douro Valley wineries map.
Comparing the Tasting Prices
The table below lines up the three walkable quintas and Quinta de la Rosa, the nearest option that is still a short ride. The tasting column shows the entry-level price each estate publishes. Distances are straight-line figures from the estates' own descriptions, and a Bomfim walk from the station is not timed on any official page, so allow longer than the raw metres suggest.
Quinta Tasting Table
This is the price comparison at the heart of the page. Figures come from the quintas' own websites, apart from Bomfim, whose price list is not shown here.
How the Listings Compare
Each row below comes from the operator's own listing, and anything the listing does not state is marked that way.

A Day in Pinhão from Porto
The timetable makes a clean day trip possible, but only with the early train. This ordered list runs from the 07:30 departure to the train back.
The Hour by Hour Plan
The CP timetable valid since 5 August gives you two morning departures that work. Tickets are fixed price and cannot sell out and no seat reservation is needed on the Douro line, so you can decide the night before. Trains have no Wi-Fi and no food trolley, so carry water.
For the full fare picture and platform tips, see Porto to Douro Valley by train.
- 07:30: board the IR at Porto Campanhã. The 07:30 train reaches Régua at 09:25 and Pinhão at 09:51. Seats are unreserved, so arrive early for a window on the right hand side, where the river runs from Porto through Tua.
- 09:51 to 10:30: step off at Pinhão and photograph the 24 azulejo panels inside the station, then walk the quay along the rabelo boats.
- 10:30 departure: take the 2 hour Pinhão to Tua rabelo cruise at €30 (a 14:30 departure also runs), or the 1 hour Romaneira loop at €15 if you want to keep more of the day for wine.
- Lunch in the village. Options include Bomfim 1896 inside Quinta do Bomfim, Cais da Foz, Cozinha da Clara and the waterside wine bar Vale do Tabua.
- Afternoon: walk to Quinta do Bomfim for a guided tasting, or to Quinta das Carvalhas for the €15 shuttle tour or a €17 flight. In summer, average daily maxima at nearby Régua reach 31.5°C in July and 31.8°C in August, so schedule the uphill walking before noon.
- If you still have legs, the 3 to 4 km climb toward the Casal de Loivos viewpoint takes 1 to 1.5 hours one way, so it needs a later train or a night in the village.
- 16:41: take the train back from Pinhão. It reaches Régua at 17:06, and the 17:12 from Régua arrives at Porto Campanhã at 19:00 and São Bento at 19:05.
- Later options: the 18:11 from Pinhão connects at Régua with the 18:37, arriving in Campanhã at about 20:30. The last train leaves Pinhão at 20:24, reaches Régua at 20:49 and the 21:07 from Régua gets to Campanhã at 23:35. Check cp.pt before relying on the evening connections.
The 07:30 Versus the 09:30
The 09:30 IR from Campanhã reaches Pinhão at 11:46, a run of 2 hours 16 minutes, and it still gives you the 16:41 or 18:11 back. It costs you the 10:30 boat departure and part of the lunch window, so the 07:30 is the better choice. The 13:30 train arrives at 15:45 and the 17:30 at 19:49, which is too late for a same-day return.
The 15:25 departure reaches Pinhão at 17:37, so it only makes sense if you are staying the night. Some Regional trains run only Monday to Saturday except public holidays, and CP states that connections are only guaranteed under normal operating conditions, so leave slack in your plan on Sundays.
The Day Trip Versus the Tour
Doing Pinhão alone by train gives you freedom but no winery visits unless you book each one, and no lunch unless you pay for it. Three guided days end with a cruise from Pinhão, which bundles both: the Complete Douro Valley wine tour from Porto with lunch, tastings and river cruise at $113.53 with two estates and a 50-minute rabelo cruise, the Douro Valley wine tour with a sommelier and boat trip at $156 with lunch in Pinhão and a 1 hour cruise, and the Douro Valley tour with 2 wineries, lunch and cruise at $224 in a van of at most 8. If the whole DIY approach appeals, the hub on free day trips from Porto lists the other destinations you can reach without a car.

Staying the Night in Pinhão
One night turns Pinhão from a whistle-stop into a base.
Why Stay Over
A night lets you catch the sunset cruise at €30, walk to Casal de Loivos in the cool of the morning, and take the 2 hour Tua cruise at 10:30 or 14:30 on a second day without racing a timetable. Rough Guides reports that Pinhão summer highs reach about 33°C, and that winter rooms can cost as little as €45 to €70.
Where to Sleep
The Vintage House Hotel at Rua António Manuel Saraiva occupies a former 19th-century winery, with 47 rooms and suites, a pool, restaurant, bar and tennis court. Quinta de la Rosa, across the river, runs two restaurants, Cozinha da Clara and Tim's Terrace, and booking sites list rooms there. For a countryside option, Quinta Nova Winery House at Covas do Douro has 11 rooms, 6 in the manor house and 5 terrace rooms, with a 1795 chapel, the Terraçu's restaurant and free transfers to and from Ferrão train station or the pier, which matters because the estate itself warns that the roads in the Douro are challenging.
For more options up and down the valley, see where to stay in the Douro Valley, and for the calendar context see the best time to visit the Douro Valley.
Two Days from Pinhão
With a night under your belt, day two can run east instead of west. The train from Pocinho at 07:09 passes through Pinhão at 08:08, and the stops between Pinhão and Pocinho, Tua, Alegria, Ferradosa, Vargelas, Vesúvio and Freixo de Numão - Mós do Douro. Closer to base, the Historic Douro Train between Pinhão and Tua runs on five wooden carriages, and Cruzeiros Douro combines a Régua to Pinhão cruise with that historic train at €135, boarding at Régua pier at 12:00 and reaching Pinhão at 15:00 with the train back at 16:20.
Routes that string two or three Douro days together are on the 2 days in the Douro Valley from Porto and 3 day trip from Porto pages, and the wider planning picture is in how to plan a Douro Valley trip from Porto. If you would rather hand the driving to someone, see the private Douro Valley tour from Porto options.

Pinhão Questions
Is Pinhão, Portugal worth visiting?
Yes, because it packs the Douro's three signature experiences into one walkable village: a station covered in 24 azulejo panels from 1937, rabelo boat cruises from €15 to €30, and three quintas within a 20 to 25 minute walk of the platform. It is also the easiest place in the valley to taste wine without a car. The Douro Valley wineries guide shows how it compares with the rest of the region.
How long is the train ride from Porto to Pinhão?
The CP timetable shows 2 hours 16 to 2 hours 21 minutes from Porto Campanhã depending on the departure: the 09:30 IR is the fastest at 2 hours 16 and the 07:30 takes 2 hours 21. Local guides round it to about 2 hours 20 minutes. The full breakdown of departures is on Porto to Douro Valley by train.
How do you spend a day in Pinhão?
Take the 07:30 IR from Campanhã, arriving at 09:51. Photograph the station tiles, ride the 2 hour Pinhão to Tua rabelo cruise at 10:30 for €30, eat lunch on the quay and finish with a tasting at Quinta do Bomfim or at Quinta das Carvalhas from €17. The 16:41 train connects at Régua and reaches Porto Campanhã at 19:00. The full plan is in the A Day in Pinhão from Porto section.
Can you walk from Pinhão station to the quintas?
Yes, to the three closest ones. Quinta das Carvalhas is about 0.45 km from the station, Quinta do Bomfim about 0.55 km, and Quinta da Roêda about 1.4 km, a 20 to 25 minute walk along the river road. Quinta de la Rosa is 1.1 km away but on the opposite bank, so it needs a taxi or a longer walk. Distances for all of them are in the Quintas Within Walking Distance table.
How hard is the walk to the Casal de Loivos viewpoint?
It is a steady climb. The route by the cemetery is 3 to 4 km and guides disagree on the time, so budget 1 to 1.5 hours each way on foot. By car it is about 7 km and roughly 10 minutes on steep winding roads. A small bar at the viewpoint sells wine by the glass, and you can read more in the What to Do in Pinhão section.
Is Pinhão a good base for a Douro Valley stay?
It is the best train base in the valley, because the IR trains to and from Porto call there and the walking quintas need no car. The Vintage House Hotel has 47 rooms in a former 19th-century winery, and Quinta Nova offers free transfers to Ferrão station. Rough Guides notes winter rooms from €45 to €70. Compare the options on where to stay in the Douro Valley.
